Oskar Flodstrom’s Pill Bottle Table Captures Viral Fame, Igniting a Design Business

Oskar Flodstrom, a 23-year-old Los Angeles-based creative, has transformed a serendipitous discovery on Facebook Marketplace into an unexpected entrepreneurial triumph, catapulting his unique design aesthetic into the viral spotlight. His journey from aspiring artist to burgeoning design entrepreneur is a testament to resourcefulness, digital marketing savvy, and the power of viral content, culminating in a surprisingly lucrative venture that began with a free acrylic base and a vision.

The Genesis of a Viral Sensation: From Engineering Dreams to Artistic Reality

Flodstrom’s early life was marked by a deep-seated passion for drawing and creation. However, like many young artists, he grappled with the perceived instability of a career in the arts. His initial inclination was towards engineering, a field he believed would offer a more secure path while still allowing for a creative outlet. “But then I found out what an engineer actually was, and it was kind of sad to me,” Flodstrom recounted in an interview, expressing his disillusionment with the practical realities of the profession.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered Flodstrom’s trajectory. With his senior year of high school disrupted, he re-evaluated his post-secondary plans. Opting against traditional college due to financial constraints and a belief that it wouldn’t serve his artistic aspirations, he found inspiration in the unconventional path of music producer Kenny Beats. This led him to explore music creation, a decision he describes as requiring significant self-starting courage. “There is something to be said about being a self-starter and having that courage,” Flodstrom stated. “It doesn’t give you the immediate return on investment. People kind of think you’re an idiot for a bit.”

Teaching swim lessons provided Flodstrom with a means to support himself while he pursued his artistic endeavors on the side. It was during this period, while seeking affordable ways to furnish his apartment, that his creative journey took a pivotal turn. His search on Facebook Marketplace for free items led him to a discarded clear, rounded acrylic base. This seemingly unremarkable object sparked an idea: to repurpose it into a piece of furniture. The acquisition of the base was an ordeal in itself; lacking a car, Flodstrom had to take a bus to retrieve it and then transport it back to his apartment.

A Creative Block and a Breakthrough: The Pill Bottle Concept

The acrylic base sat dormant in Flodstrom’s apartment for months, a silent testament to his creative process. “I didn’t touch it for months, honestly,” he admitted. “It was just sitting there.” The concept that began to form in his mind was a pill bottle, a shape that resonated with him. He envisioned using wood for the top but ultimately settled on foam as a more accessible and manageable material.

The transformation of the free acrylic base into the now-famous pill bottle side table was completed earlier this year. The project was remarkably cost-effective. With the base secured for free, Flodstrom estimates the total cost for the remaining materials – foam, paint, and paper for the label – was around $120. He also attributes part of his success to his unassuming demeanor, which he believes fosters a willingness in others to assist him. He cited an instance where he received a significant discount on printing a large label, paying $12 instead of the usual $30, because the store employee was receptive to his low-key approach.

The initial plan was to feature the pill bottle piece in the background of one of his music videos. However, a more potent idea emerged: to document the entire creative process on video and share it on social media platforms, where he operates under the moniker Erik Oskr. This wasn’t his first foray into selling custom-made furniture online; he had previously sold an avocado-themed chair for approximately $500, sourced from free discarded items found on the streets of Los Angeles.

Viral Phenomenon and Strategic Partnership

The pill bottle table became an instant internet sensation. Flodstrom’s video chronicling its creation went viral in June, attracting the attention of NO LOGO, a company specializing in product manufacturing for founders and brands without the need for proprietary factories. NO LOGO extended an offer to create a free sample based on Flodstrom’s provided photos and measurements. They collaborated to refine the design, opting for a more stable material for the lid, and assisted him in establishing an e-commerce presence through a Shopify website.

The delivery of the sample coincided with a period of personal transition for Flodstrom, who was living out of a car he had recently purchased. A representative from NO LOGO approached him for an interview about his creation, an opportunity Flodstrom accepted without fully anticipating its impact. At this stage, his sales projections were modest; he hoped the venture would generate enough income to secure stable housing.

A Slow Burn Ignites: From Initial Hesitation to Explosive Growth

The initial rollout of the pill bottle table on social media experienced a slow start. Instagram flagged one of Flodstrom’s promotional videos due to the presence of an "Adderall" label on the pill bottle, creating an unforeseen hurdle. He had anticipated a brisk initial sales performance, aiming for 10 to 15 sales within the first day. However, after 36 hours, only a handful of orders had materialized. “I was kind of panicking because the first couple of videos hadn’t done well,” he recalled.

In response to the stalled momentum, Flodstrom demonstrated his adaptability by creating a new video showcasing an alternative use for the pill bottle side table: as a laundry hamper. This creative pivot proved to be the catalyst for explosive growth. The video garnered unprecedented attention, reaching an estimated one million views per hour for a sustained period of ten hours. This surge in visibility translated directly into sales, with 200 units sold in the immediate aftermath. “Still, I don’t think I’ve fully grasped it,” Flodstrom admitted, reflecting on the overwhelming response.

Financial Windfall and Future Aspirations

The pill bottle piece generated an astonishing $150,000 in sales within a mere two-week period. Sales have since stabilized, consistently averaging between $1,500 and $4,000 daily, contingent on advertising efforts. Flodstrom explained that NO LOGO takes a modest commission to cover manufacturing expenses, leaving him with an estimated profit margin that is five times higher.

Looking ahead, Flodstrom is focused on expanding his product line and scaling his business. Despite his newfound financial success, he has maintained a grounded approach to his lifestyle, opting to prioritize stability before indulging in significant changes. He is keenly aware of the ephemeral nature of viral trends and is determined to build a sustainable enterprise. “I don’t really want to be known as the pill bottle guy,” Flodstrom stated. “I wanted that to be the start, but I have a bunch of cool ideas.” His upcoming projects include a giant razor blade mirror and a lava lamp crafted from a Sprite bottle, showcasing his continued commitment to innovative design. He also revealed the creation of a bong made from a milk jug, underscoring his eclectic and bold design philosophy.

Flodstrom is actively leveraging social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to maintain momentum and explore affiliate marketing opportunities. He is also considering live streaming as a potential revenue stream. While acknowledging that he is still navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship, Flodstrom is dedicated to establishing a legitimate business rooted in his artistic vision, an endeavor he has never undertaken before. “I don’t feel like an artistic genius by any means,” he confessed. “I still want to prove myself in that realm. So I don’t even know what to say most of the time. It feels like a fantasy. A daydream.” His journey serves as an inspiring example of how unconventional thinking and digital engagement can unlock remarkable entrepreneurial success.
