Natural Secures 30 Million Dollars to Build the Financial Infrastructure for Autonomous AI Agents and Challenge Payment Giants

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence has transitioned from simple text generation to the deployment of "agentic" systems—autonomous software entities capable of executing complex, multi-step workflows. While these AI agents can now identify logistics vendors, negotiate freight contracts, and manage inventory, they consistently encounter a terminal bottleneck: the inability to independently execute financial transactions. Current global financial infrastructure, designed for human authorization and verification, remains incompatible with the high-velocity requirements of autonomous software. To address this structural gap, Natural, a San Francisco-based fintech startup, has announced the closing of a $30 million Series A funding round led by Forerunner Ventures. This capital injection, which brings the company’s total funding to $40 million, is earmarked for the development of a dedicated "agent orchestration layer" intended to serve as the primary financial rail for the burgeoning AI economy.

The Structural Incompatibility of Legacy Financial Rails

The global financial system operates on "rails"—the underlying technical and regulatory frameworks, such as ACH (Automated Clearing House), SWIFT, and credit card networks, that facilitate the movement of capital. These systems were architected in an era defined by human-to-human or human-to-business interaction. Consequently, they are embedded with friction points designed for human oversight, including multi-factor authentication (MFA), biometric verification, and manual dispute resolution processes.

For an AI agent designed to operate at computer speed, these legacy requirements represent more than a minor delay; they are a fundamental barrier to autonomy. When an AI agent attempts to book a shipment or purchase cloud resources, it typically requires a human user to intervene at the point of checkout to provide a credit card number or authorize a bank transfer. This "human-in-the-loop" requirement negates the efficiency gains promised by autonomous agents. Natural’s core thesis is that the next phase of the digital economy requires a financial architecture that treats AI agents as first-class economic citizens capable of storing, moving, and collecting funds within predefined parameters.

A Chronology of Development: From Ivella to Natural

The genesis of Natural is rooted in the experiences of its founding team within the traditional and "Fintech 2.0" sectors. CEO Kahlil Lalji previously co-founded Ivella, a Y Combinator-backed banking product designed for couples, which was acquired by the financial wellness platform Earnin in 2023. Following the acquisition, Lalji served as an engineer at Earnin, gaining insight into the post-Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) financial landscape.

The transition from consumer fintech to AI infrastructure began approximately a year ago. Lalji, alongside Ivella co-founder Eric Wang and former Nextdoor engineering manager Walt Leung, identified that while the "brain" of the AI (large language models) was advancing exponentially, the "circulatory system" (payments) remained stagnant. Despite an initial reluctance to re-enter the heavily regulated and capital-intensive financial sector, the founders concluded that the emergence of agentic commerce represented a generational shift in how value is exchanged.

Natural was formally established in 2025, positioning itself not merely as a payment processor, but as an orchestration layer. This distinction is critical: rather than just providing a gateway, Natural aims to manage the entire lifecycle of an agent-initiated transaction, including identity verification, fund custody, and the programmatic resolution of disputes.

Strategic Investment and the Forerunner Thesis

The $30 million Series A round was led by Kirsten Green, the founder and managing partner of Forerunner Ventures. Forerunner has a history of identifying shifts in consumer behavior and commerce infrastructure, having been an early investor in companies like Shopify, Dollar Shave Club, and Chime.

Green’s investment in Natural signals a conviction that the "consumer experience" is moving toward a model where software acts as a proxy for the individual. In this "proxy economy," the value proposition shifts from providing a user-friendly interface for humans to providing a robust API for agents. According to Forerunner, the ambition of Natural extends beyond simple checkout automation; it encompasses a complete redesign of payment infrastructure, including how funds are escrowed and how transactions are audited in an environment where the "buyer" is a line of code.

The funding round also attracted interest due to Natural’s ability to recruit senior talent from established fintech leaders. The startup has successfully poached engineering and product staff from Stripe, Ramp, and Square—companies that currently dominate the traditional payment space but are encumbered by the need to maintain legacy systems.

Competitive Landscape: The Race Against Stripe and Stablecoins

Natural enters a market that is rapidly becoming a frontline in the fintech wars. Its most formidable competitor is Stripe, the $70 billion-plus giant that has long been the preferred payment layer for the internet. Stripe has recently pivoted its messaging and product roadmap to focus on "AI-native" payments, recognizing that its future growth depends on capturing the transaction volume generated by autonomous agents.

However, Natural’s leadership argues that established incumbents face the "innovator’s dilemma." Building for AI agents requires more than adding an API endpoint; it requires a reimagining of risk models and settlement times. While Stripe is optimizing existing rails for AI, Natural is attempting to build new rails specifically for them.

The competitive landscape also includes a wave of startups utilizing blockchain technology to solve the agentic payment problem. Companies such as Skyfire Systems, backed by DCVC, are leveraging USD-backed stablecoins to facilitate machine-to-machine (M2M) payments. Stablecoins offer the advantage of near-instant settlement and 24/7 availability, which aligns with the operational cadence of AI.

Natural is taking a hybrid approach. While the company plans to incorporate stablecoins into its architecture to facilitate high-speed, cross-border transfers, it is also building deep integrations with traditional banking systems. This dual-track strategy is designed to ensure compliance with existing financial regulations while providing the technical flexibility of decentralized finance.

Economic Implications: The Velocity of the Machine Economy

The primary driver behind the investment in Natural is the projected explosion in transaction volume. In a traditional economy, the number of payments is limited by the number of human interactions and the hours in a day. In an agentic economy, transactions can occur continuously and at a scale that is orders of magnitude larger than current levels.

Lalji has posited that the market for agentic payments could be three to four orders of magnitude greater than the current human-centric payment market. For example, an autonomous supply chain agent might execute hundreds of micro-transactions per hour to optimize shipping routes, purchase carbon offsets, and pay for temporary warehouse space. If these transactions occur at "computer speed," the velocity of money increases, potentially leading to greater economic efficiency but also requiring a level of throughput that current ACH systems (which can take days to settle) cannot support.

Addressing the Risks of Autonomous Spending

The prospect of autonomous AI agents managing corporate or personal funds introduces significant risks, particularly regarding security and overspending. To mitigate these concerns, Natural’s infrastructure includes a "governance layer" that allows human users to set granular permissions. These include:

  1. Spending Caps: Strict limits on the amount an agent can transact within a specific timeframe or per vendor.
  2. Whitelist/Blacklist Protocols: Restricting agents to transacting only with verified and approved vendors.
  3. Programmable Escrow: Holding funds in a secure state until the AI agent can verify that the digital or physical good has been delivered.
  4. Auditability: A cryptographically secure ledger of all agent actions, providing a transparent "paper trail" for compliance and tax purposes.

These features are essential for gaining the trust of enterprise clients who are wary of giving "black box" algorithms access to their balance sheets.

Future Outlook: Toward a Machine-to-Machine Economy

The successful Series A funding of Natural marks a pivotal moment in the professionalization of the AI ecosystem. It suggests that the industry is moving past the "chatbot" phase and into a functional phase where AI is integrated into the structural fabric of global trade.

As Natural moves out of its beta phase and into a wider commercial release, the focus will shift to its ability to handle the complexities of international regulation, including Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements as they apply to non-human entities. If Natural succeeds in establishing its orchestration layer as the industry standard, it could fundamentally alter the power dynamics of the fintech sector, challenging the dominance of legacy banks and established payment processors.

The broader implication of Natural’s mission is the realization of a "Machine Economy," where the majority of economic activity is conducted by autonomous systems. In this future, the speed of commerce is limited only by processing power and network latency, rather than the constraints of human bureaucracy. With $40 million in total capital and a team comprised of fintech veterans, Natural is now positioned to lead the charge in building the financial backbone for this next era of digital evolution.
