Natural Secures 30 Million Dollars to Build the Financial Infrastructure for Autonomous AI Agents

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has ushered in the era of "agentic workflows," where AI models no longer simply generate text or images but actively execute complex, multi-step tasks. In sectors ranging from logistics to corporate procurement, AI agents are now capable of identifying vendors, comparing pricing structures, and negotiating delivery terms via automated messaging. However, a significant structural bottleneck remains: the final transaction. Despite their cognitive capabilities, these agents remain tethered to human intervention whenever a payment is required. This friction is not merely a software limitation but a fundamental mismatch between 21-century AI and the mid-20th-century financial infrastructure upon which the global economy operates.

Natural, a financial technology startup based in San Francisco, has emerged from stealth to address this systemic gap. The company announced today that it has raised $30 million in a Series A funding round led by Forerunner Ventures, bringing its total capital raised to date to $40 million. The investment signals a growing conviction among venture capitalists that the next frontier of the "AI revolution" is not just better reasoning, but the creation of an autonomous economic layer where software can hold, move, and manage capital without a human in the loop.

The Obsolescence of Legacy Financial Rails

To understand the challenge Natural is tackling, one must examine the "financial rails"—the underlying networks like ACH (Automated Clearing House), SWIFT, and credit card processors—that facilitate the movement of money. These systems were architected for a world where every transaction is initiated, authorized, and verified by a human being.

Traditional payment systems rely on synchronous authorization. When a credit card is swiped or an online "Buy" button is clicked, the system expects a human-provided credential or a biometric confirmation. For an AI agent designed to operate at "computer speed," these human-centric protocols act as a massive throttle. Furthermore, legacy banking infrastructure is built around the concept of "Know Your Customer" (KYC) and identity verification for physical persons or legal entities. It lacks the primitives to handle "Know Your Agent" (KYA) protocols, which would allow a business to delegate specific financial authority to a piece of code while maintaining security and oversight.

Natural’s core thesis is that the existing rails cannot be merely patched; they must be redesigned. By building a dedicated agent orchestration layer, Natural allows companies to provision AI agents with their own secure digital wallets and spending limits. This enables a freight-management agent, for instance, to not only find a shipping partner but to execute the payment instantly upon contract signing, reducing the operational cycle from days to seconds.

Strategic Investment and Market Positioning

The $30 million Series A round was led by Kirsten Green, the founder and managing partner of Forerunner Ventures. Forerunner is traditionally known for its early bets on consumer-facing giants like Dollar Shave Club, Warby Parker, and Chime. Green’s decision to lead a deeply technical infrastructure play like Natural suggests a shift in how the industry views the future of commerce.

According to Green, the ambition of Natural extends beyond simple "check-out" automation. The startup is aiming to reinvent how disputed transactions are handled and how liquidity is managed in an environment where agents are transacting with other agents. As commerce moves away from manual browsing and toward autonomous fulfillment, the infrastructure that manages those transactions becomes the most valuable real estate in the fintech ecosystem.

Natural is entering a competitive arena currently dominated by incumbents like Stripe. While Stripe has recently begun rolling out features to support AI-driven businesses, its massive legacy architecture is still primarily optimized for human-to-business transactions. Natural’s advantage, according to CEO Kahlil Lalji, is its lack of "technical debt." By building from the ground up specifically for the agentic economy, Natural can implement features like real-time streaming payments and complex conditional logic that legacy systems struggle to support.

Founders and the Path to Natural

The founding of Natural represents a return to the fintech sector for Kahlil Lalji, who previously co-founded Ivella, a Y Combinator-backed banking platform designed for couples. After Ivella was acquired in 2023 by the financial wellness platform Earnin, Lalji spent two years as an engineer, observing the explosive growth of Large Language Models (LLMs).

Lalji’s experience in the post-Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) era left him initially wary of the high-friction world of financial regulation and banking partnerships. However, the realization that AI agents were evolving at a pace that far outstripped the capabilities of existing banks became too significant to ignore. He teamed up with his former Ivella co-founder Eric Wang and Walt Leung, a veteran engineering manager from Nextdoor, to launch Natural in early 2025.

The startup’s mission has already acted as a magnet for top-tier talent in the fintech world. Natural has successfully recruited senior engineering and product staff from established industry leaders, including Stripe, Ramp, and Square. This migration of talent suggests that the industry’s most experienced builders view the shift toward agentic payments as the next major architectural transition in finance.

A Hybrid Approach: Banks and Stablecoins

A critical component of Natural’s strategy is its technological flexibility. While some competitors, such as the DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems, are focusing almost exclusively on using USD-backed stablecoins to facilitate agent payments, Natural is taking a hybrid approach.

Stablecoins offer the advantage of 24/7 settlement and programmable logic via smart contracts, making them an ideal medium for autonomous agents. However, the vast majority of global business still operates on traditional fiat currency and bank-to-bank transfers. Natural is building an architecture that supports both. By integrating with traditional banking rails while also incorporating stablecoin capabilities, Natural ensures that its users can transact with legacy businesses today while being ready for a fully on-chain economy tomorrow.

This "bridge" strategy is essential for enterprise adoption. Large corporations are often hesitant to move their entire treasury onto blockchain-based systems due to regulatory uncertainty. By providing a platform that looks like a traditional fintech interface but operates with the speed of an AI-native system, Natural lowers the barrier to entry for firms looking to automate their procurement and supply chain operations.

Economic Implications: The Velocity of Capital

The most profound impact of Natural’s technology may be the dramatic increase in the velocity of money. In the current economy, the speed of commerce is limited by the "human-in-the-loop" bottleneck. Business hours, weekend banking holidays, and the manual approval of invoices create a drag on global GDP.

Lalji argues that when transactions happen at computer speed, the volume of economic activity will experience a non-linear surge. If an AI agent can execute a thousand micro-transactions in the time it takes a human to approve one wire transfer, the total number of payments in the global economy could increase by several orders of magnitude. This shift could lead to more efficient markets, as prices adjust in real-time based on agent-driven supply and demand signals, and capital is reallocated instantly to its most productive use.

Analysis of Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the significant capital infusion and technical pedigree, Natural faces formidable challenges. The foremost is regulatory compliance. Financial authorities around the world are still grappling with how to regulate AI. Issues of liability—who is responsible if an AI agent makes an unauthorized or "hallucinated" payment?—remain legally murky. Natural will need to build robust guardrails, including sophisticated "kill switches" and programmable policy engines, to ensure that businesses can trust their agents with significant sums of capital.

Furthermore, the incumbent giants are not standing still. Stripe, with its massive valuation and deep relationships with millions of businesses, is aggressively pursuing the "AI for payments" vertical. For Natural to succeed, it must maintain a pace of innovation that justifies its position as a specialized alternative to the general-purpose payment processors.

The launch of Natural marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of artificial intelligence. It represents the transition of AI from a tool for thought to a tool for action. As the "agentic orchestration layer" becomes a standard part of the enterprise tech stack, the distinction between software and economic actor will continue to blur. With $40 million in total funding and a team of industry veterans, Natural is positioned to be the primary architect of the rails that will carry the weight of this new, autonomous economy.
