Natural Secures 30 Million Dollars in Series A Funding to Build Autonomous Financial Infrastructure for the AI Agent Economy

The financial technology sector is witnessing a fundamental shift as artificial intelligence evolves from a conversational tool into an autonomous workforce capable of executing complex logistical tasks. Natural, a startup focused on redesigning the underlying architecture of global finance, has announced a $30 million Series A funding round led by Forerunner. This fresh capital, which brings the company’s total funding to $40 million, is earmarked for the development of a payment orchestration layer specifically engineered for AI agents. Unlike traditional financial rails designed for human-initiated transactions, Natural is building a system that allows autonomous software entities to store funds, execute payments, and manage vendor relationships without the friction of human intervention.

As AI agents begin to handle more sophisticated workflows—such as identifying freight vendors, comparing logistics pricing, and coordinating deliveries—they have encountered a significant bottleneck: the payment process. Most modern financial systems, including credit card networks and the Automated Clearing House (ACH), require human authorization or multi-factor authentication steps that AI agents cannot independently satisfy. Natural’s entry into the market signals an attempt to solve this "agentic payment" problem by creating a financial backbone that operates at the speed of computation rather than the speed of human decision-making.

The Evolution of Agentic Capabilities and the Infrastructure Gap

The rise of agentic AI represents the next frontier of the digital economy. While previous iterations of AI were largely confined to generating text or analyzing data, current agents are being integrated into supply chains, procurement, and customer service. For instance, an AI agent in a logistics firm can now scan thousands of data points to find a carrier that can deliver a specific shipment across the country. However, once the vendor is selected and the terms are negotiated, the agent must typically hand the task back to a human employee to enter credit card details or authorize a wire transfer.

This reliance on legacy financial rails—the infrastructure that facilitates the movement of money and information between banks and businesses—creates a "human-in-the-loop" requirement that limits the scalability of AI. Traditional payment systems were built on the assumption of human identity and manual verification. Credit cards rely on signatures or PINs, and ACH transfers often require manual portal logins. These protocols were designed to prevent fraud by ensuring a person is behind the transaction, but they simultaneously act as a barrier to the autonomous efficiency promised by AI.

Kahlil Lalji, co-founder and CEO of Natural, identified this structural misalignment approximately one year ago. With a background in banking and engineering, Lalji recognized that the rapid evolution of AI agents was outstripping the capacity of existing financial architecture. He observed that for AI to reach its full potential, it requires a native financial environment where it can hold a balance, verify its own transactions, and settle disputes autonomously.

A Strategic Pivot from Consumer Fintech to Infrastructure

The founding of Natural represents a return to the fintech sector for Lalji, who previously co-founded Ivella, a banking product designed for couples. Ivella, which was backed by Y Combinator, was sold in 2023 to the financial wellness platform Earnin. Following the sale, Lalji worked as an engineer for two years but initially intended to move away from the highly regulated and often volatile world of finance, particularly after the end of the Zero Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP) era, which saw a contraction in fintech valuations.

Despite his initial hesitation, the necessity of a payment layer for AI became an unavoidable opportunity. Lalji teamed up with Eric Wang, his former co-founder at Ivella, and Walt Leung, a veteran engineering manager from Nextdoor, to establish Natural in 2025. The team’s mission was not merely to build a better digital wallet, but to construct a comprehensive orchestration layer. This layer serves as a bridge, allowing AI agents to interact with both traditional fiat banking systems and emerging digital asset structures like stablecoins.

The startup’s ambitious roadmap has already attracted top-tier talent from established fintech giants. Senior staff from Stripe, Ramp, and Square have joined Natural, bringing experience in scaling complex payment systems. This influx of talent suggests a high level of industry confidence in the "agent-first" financial model, positioning Natural as a serious contender against incumbents who are also racing to update their systems for the AI era.

Strategic Investment and the Competitive Landscape

The $30 million Series A round was led by Kirsten Green, the founder and managing partner of Forerunner. Green, known for her early investments in consumer-centric successes like Glossier and Dollar Shave Club, has recently shifted her firm’s focus toward the future of commerce and the "experience economy." Her interest in Natural stems from the belief that AI will fundamentally change how goods and services are procured, moving the burden of transaction management from the consumer or employee to the software agent.

Natural is entering a competitive field where it faces both established giants and nimble, blockchain-native startups. Stripe, currently one of the most valuable private companies in the world, has already begun integrating AI capabilities into its checkout products and is exploring how its "Link" product can be adapted for automated systems. Meanwhile, startups such as Skyfire Systems, which is backed by DCVC, are focusing on using USD-backed stablecoins as the primary medium of exchange for AI agents, arguing that blockchain settlement is inherently more compatible with autonomous code.

Natural’s approach is distinct in its hybrid nature. While the company plans to incorporate stablecoins to facilitate near-instant settlement, it is also building deep integrations with traditional bank payments. This ensures that the platform is compatible with the existing global banking system, allowing AI agents to interact with traditional vendors who may not yet be equipped to handle digital assets. Furthermore, Natural is addressing the complex issue of dispute resolution—a major pain point in automated commerce—by redesigning how "chargebacks" and transaction audits are handled when no human was directly involved in the purchase.

Timeline of Development and Future Projections

The development of Natural has followed a rapid trajectory, reflecting the urgency of the AI market:

  • 2023: Kahlil Lalji exits Ivella and begins observing the limitations of fintech infrastructure during his tenure at Earnin.
  • Late 2024: Conceptualization of the "agent orchestration layer" begins as AI agents start gaining traction in enterprise settings.
  • Early 2025: Natural is officially founded by Lalji, Wang, and Leung.
  • Mid-2025: The company operates in a beta trial, testing its architecture with a select group of companies utilizing autonomous agents for procurement and logistics.
  • Present: Natural closes its $30 million Series A round and begins a broad recruitment push to scale its engineering and compliance teams.

Looking forward, Lalji and his team are betting on a massive expansion of transaction volume. The core thesis is that if transactions can occur at computer speed, the frequency of commerce will increase exponentially. Lalji suggests that the number of payments occurring globally could grow by three or four orders of magnitude. In a world where AI agents are constantly negotiating micro-services, purchasing API credits, or managing just-in-time inventory, the sheer volume of small-value, high-frequency transactions would overwhelm current human-centric banking systems.

Implications for the Global Economy

The transition to agentic payments has profound implications for both the B2B and B2C sectors. In the enterprise world, the automation of the "quote-to-cash" cycle could significantly reduce operational overhead. Companies would no longer need large accounts payable departments to manually verify invoices and authorize payments; instead, AI agents would handle the entire lifecycle of a transaction, from procurement to final settlement, with Natural providing the secure, audited infrastructure.

For consumers, the impact will likely be felt in the "concierge" economy. Future AI assistants could not only find the best flight and hotel for a vacation but also complete the purchase, manage the cancellation insurance, and handle refunds if the trip is disrupted—all without the user ever opening a wallet.

However, this shift also introduces new challenges regarding security and regulation. If AI agents are moving billions of dollars autonomously, the "Know Your Customer" (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) protocols must be reimagined. Natural’s role as an orchestration layer includes the responsibility of ensuring that these agents operate within legal frameworks, providing a layer of accountability that satisfies regulators while maintaining the speed of autonomous software.

As Natural moves out of beta and begins to compete directly with incumbents like Stripe, the success of the platform will depend on its ability to build trust with both developers and traditional financial institutions. By providing a dedicated financial backbone for the AI workforce, Natural is positioning itself at the center of a new economic paradigm—one where the "invisible hand" of the market is increasingly a digital one.
